As we walk from the Church of the Fonz I can't help but think how ridiculous our task is. Building a robot? I have some knowledge of cybernetics, robots made to be like humans but a full on military war-bot? I don't think we can find the crap to put this together. Having Arthur here helps to keep me grounded and to not lose myself like I did killing those Horsemen. I don't really know much about Jane or Kate yet but so far they make me think of my wife Amanda and my daughter Rachel. Jane reminds me of my wife's determination and decisiveness sometimes, while Kate reminds me of Rachel's innocence. It hurts to think about sometimes but everyone tells me it will get better in time.
Along the road they spot a building and decide to investigate. It is in good repair except for the broken windows and rubble strewn in front. The smell of oil thick in the air. From the number of cars around it was obvious that it used to be a car dealership. As they approach the dealership Arthur climbs to the top of the first rubble pile and the rest scavenge for anything of use. While looking, a sudden gunshot is heard and everyone stops. Dahvin's instincts from the MPD take over without his thinking.
Crap, this isn't a good situation. With the girls going around the sides one of them might get shot. Arthur and I are going to have to keep whoever this is occupied up here. Why is it that people's first reactions are to shoot first? Why can't we run into people who just want to talk?
Arthur looked like he had enough after a bullet hit next to his head and put a round into the man’s chest, putting an end to the fight. From his training Dahvin knew he was going to die, the question was how long it would take for him to bleed out.
We can't just leave this poor bastard to bleed to death, we have to do something. The only thing we can do is put him out of his misery. The girls certainly don't have the stomach for it and Arthur never could stand to kill someone in the force. That leaves me and my axe gun to finish this. Jane gave it to me back at the church which is only another thing that reminds me of my Amanda. She used to give me random things she found around that she thought I could use in my job. of course Arthur only thinks of himself, just because I enjoyed my work doesn't mean I enjoyed killing.
Dahvin raises his weapon and takes aim. Bringing the weapon down with full force he manages to sever the head in a single blow. With a straight face Dahvin looks down on the body and moves on, on the inside Dahvin feels violently ill thinking about how he just took a man's head off. Dahvin notices that Arthur is glaring with disapproval as he walks away.
If he really felt that strongly he probably shouldn’t have given the poor guy a fatal shot in the chest. This is how people survive out here, and the world doesn't care what your morals are. With the girls searching the body, I should look around to see if the dearly departed had some friends around. I guess we should actually check this building before we leave.
Arthur climbed a rubble pile while Dahvin had been looking around and Dahvin noticed he is trying to not look at him. Searching the nearby cars yielded a few wires but nothing else. Dahvin climbs through one of the broken windows with the girls in order to enter the building. Inside a layer of dust covers everything and the air heavy with a moldy smell. In the center of the room Dahvin could see a cage with two intact looking cars on the inside. Moving to the other side of the building they encounter a closed door. Jane decides it will be a good idea to just kick in the door rather than try the handle. Dahvin notices as he walks in that the door was unlocked the whole time.
Reminds me of the time my wife forgot where we kept the key to our house so she broke the window on the door and let herself in. Of course we could never get the window replaced so the back hall and pantry were always cold in winter.
The girls enter the office and Dahvin comes in behind them. Inside there is a water cooler full of water as well as some other things like paperclips and the best thing, keys. Dahvin watched Kate looking around and chuckled to myself hearing her names for things and her guesses at names.
My daughter had never been one to pay close attention in school so I would always play games with her making her guess the names and functions of random things I would bring home that I found.
Jane uses her water purifier to purify the water and they all breath a sigh of relief. Clean reliable water. After a final check around the room they find some keys and head out to tell Arthur what they found. Arthur tells Dahvin he didn't notice anything unusual but He could tell when Arthur was lying, he has always been bad at lying. Dahvin figured to let it drop and told Arthur about the building. The whole time Dahvin could notice Arthur's eyed glazed over without really any care in them.
He is really worrying me. What is it that has taken away the fire I saw in his eyes when we first met? The passion he had for saving people and bringing justice to those that needed it?
As they stood in silence they hear a whimpering coming from the garage attached to the dealership. They approach and they find the door to be locked and controlled by a keypad with a key hole. Thankfully the keys Kate found work like a charm and the garage door opens with a metallic grinding noise. Dahvin pulls out his flashlight and points it towards where the whimpering is coming from, a pile of rags. Inside there is a cute puppy with it's ear bitten off. Deciding a place with a big closing door is a safe place, the group beds down for the night.
